10th edition

Bonjour et bienvenue, summer is in the air!

The sun’s shining, the courtyard is filled with luxuriant flowers and plants and guests are enjoying a glass of champagne in the inner garden at Bridges or visiting the Princenhof gallery. Summer is in the air! This lively season offers many opportunities at The Grand. To usher in the summer, the traditional French Fête de la Musique was celebrated on 21 June, the longest day of the year. During this special event, we have officially opened our hotel as the first Sofitel Legend in Europe, with Denis Hennequin (Chairman & CEO Accor) and Robert Gaymer-Jones (CEO Sofitel Worldwide) attending.

The Grachtenfestival is also on the agenda again this year. With more than 150 concerts at 40 locations in 10 days, it is once again the ultimate festival with lots of classical music at inspiring locations on and along the water. We will also be participating, in a unique way, giving our guests the opportunity to enjoy it from one of our already ‘legendary’ suites.

The summer months also offer a unique opportunity to enjoy our beautiful inner garden. Starting this summer, we will be offering the Summer Sunday each Sunday, a delightful way to enjoy live music in a relaxed setting. When you come to visit us, go see our new gallery. We are currently showing the photo exposition On-Set / Off-Set, des Instants de Cinéma, with magnificent images of international film stars. The unusual thing about this exposition – which came about in cooperation with the French gallery Polka - is that the images were taken both in front of and behind the scenes.

Furthermore, this April I was appointed as General Manager of one of our new Sofitel’s properties in Asia. Following strategic considerations, this appointment has been cancelled. It is with great pleasure that I will stay in my native country and city and continue to focus on positioning my so beloved Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam as one of the top hotels within the international luxury hotel community.

The Grand also has enough in store after the summer. For example, on 4 and 5 November, we are organising Stars, Food & Art for the fifth consecutive year. Dutch & French Michelin star chefs will be preparing their ‘signature dishes’ during these chic gala evenings. This special jubilee edition has the theme ‘The Best Of’ and I can assure you that this will be a lustrum not to be missed!

Wishing you a relaxing and Magnifique summer,

Robert-Jan Woltering
General Manager

Preview On-Set/Off-Set,
des Instants de Cinéma

The bond between Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam and art has always been very close. The Grand continues to cherish that bond by collaborating with artists on a regular basis. Luxury hotels have always been a source of inspiration for top directors. For example, Sofitel Old Cataract in Aswan, Egypt was the décor for the film ‘Death of the Nile’, based on the book of the same name by Agatha Christie and the Lumière brothers presented the first public film showing in Sofitel Scribe in Paris as early as 1895. This bond was the reason that Sofitel chose the world of the film as the theme for this new exposition, in combination with the French gallery Polka. The work of Alain Loison, Derek Hudson, Emanuele Scorcelletti and Stefano De Luigi can currently be admired in Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam. They captured great stars such as Sharon Stone, Woody Allen and Quentin Tarantino, both On and Off Set. This provides beautiful images of special moments, such as Johnny Depp in lotus position on an outside wall and Pénélope Cruz and Pedro Almodovar having lunch during the Cannes Film Festival. On 1 June, we opened our Princenhof gallery in the presence of photographer Alain Loison. It was a festive preview of the exposition On-set / Off- Set, des instants de Cinéma, naturally an exposition in French style. The photos will be on display until 15 August; admission is free.

Summer Sunday,
taking place in the garden terrace of Bridges

This summer a new event is taking place in the Garden Terrace of Bridges. From the 19th of June until the 28th of August, every Sunday (when weather permits) live music will be played by artists of the Music Academy. The Garden Terrace of Bridges is one of Amsterdam’s best-kept secrets. Bridges Garden is an oasis of peace and tranquility, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The relaxing sofas and modern pond make the Garden Terrace a harmonious environment where you can enjoy a Summer Lunch, Oysters from the Raw bar, a delicious cocktail or The Grand Afternoon Tea Tradition with a glass of Gosset Champagne. The live vocals, piano and guitar notes in the background will serve to further enhance this sumptuous experience.

Fête de la Musique

Some openings are more than Grand … they are Legendary. On 21 June, the longest day of the year, Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam organised the Fête de la Musique for the second consecutive year. Since the musician Joel Cohen conceived of the idea for the festival in the 1970s, it has now spread to more than three hundred cities worldwide. His idea was to have as many performers and musicians as possible hit the streets for a whole night of music on this first evening of summer.
The French origin of Fête de la Musique and the French character of The Grand complement each other perfectly: a beautiful combination for a magnificent evening. Like last year, the invited guests were entertained entirely in French style. Then, the gathering adjourned to the ‘award-winning’ inner garden of Restaurant Bridges. There, they could enjoy performances by a selection of performers. What made this year different was the presentation of the hotel to a broad, international audience from countries such as the United States, Great Britain and, of course, France and the Netherlands, as part of Sofitel’s exclusive label: Legend, a collection of legendary and luxurious Sofitel hotels. The Grand is the first Legend hotel in Europe. We were extremely pleased that our Chairman & CEO Accor Denis Hennequin and CEO Sofitel Worldwide Robert Gaymer-Jones were present at this festive opening.

Lunch tip

The terrace of restaurant Bridges can be found in the magnificent, newly designed inner garden of hotel The Grand. It is the perfect place to enjoy culinary delights and relax. At Bridges, everything revolves around very fresh fish. Our Raw Bar offers a selection of raw, sliced fish and fruits de mer such as minced bass, carpaccio of squid, oysters and exclusive caviar. We cordially invite you on a sun-drenched summer day to come and enjoy the best the Raw Bar has to offer: The Grand Ocean Platter. This luxurious plateau is filled with oysters, crustaceans and shellfish, king crab and various types of delicious minced fresh fish.

The Grachtenfestival

The Grachtenfestival marks the annual opening of the classical music season. The first festival was organised in 1998 around the Prinsengracht concert and lasted for three days. The festival has now expanded to a ten-day event with more than 120 concerts at unusual locations in (the city centre of) Amsterdam. The Grand is very honoured to participate this year, and to take part in the series 'Suite in a suite', a string of classical concerts in our famous suites. These unique concerts will be held on Sunday, 14 August; a luxurious Afternoon Tea will be presented prior to or following the concerts.
